Introduction to The World of Rio Carnival

Whether you love to shake your booty or are addicted to the beat of the drums, take your first steps into the colourful world of Rio Carnival percussion and dance with renowned international guests, Nunzio "Moskito" Toscano (ITA) and Clo Mudrik (BR).

Hosted by Sydney's own samba band, Bateria 61, join us for an afternoon of drumming and dancing as we pretend we're sipping on caipirinhas on the streets of Rio.

Session one 1:15pm to 2:45pm (1.5 hrs) - percussion only:
Learn the fundamentals of samba percussion as "bateria" with acclaimed sambista Nunzio "Moskito" Toscano. Learn the basic techniques and interlocking parts to allow you to interact musically with other drummers. Learn to play surdo, caixa and other instruments of the drum section (bateria). *All Brazilian drums are provided.

Session two 3pm to 5pm (2 hrs) - percussion and dance:
Lead by São Paulo native Clo Mudrik, take a trip to the streets of Brazil and dance to the beat of live drums. You won't be able to dance to recorded music after this!

What to bring (recommended):
Bottle of water
Pair of ear plugs or we will provide you cotton wool to protect your hearing

Drummers - session 1 and 2 $45
Dancers - session 2 only $30
Drummers are welcome to dance for session 2!

Nunzio Moskito Toscano:


Originally from Italy, Nunzio has spent 6 years traveling back and forth to Brazil to study and work with Beija-Flor, one of the biggest & most famous samba schools in Rio. He has played at numerous events in various cities, run pandeiro workshops, and has studied pandeiro and repique with some of the best teachers in Brazil.

Clo Mudrik:


Clo Mudrik has been researching traditional dance and rhythms since 1981 after years of competitive gymnastics and Laban.

She lived in New Zealand for 10 years and taught Capoeira, Traditional Brazilian Dances and was director of dance for Wellington Batucada. Since 2008 she has produced festivals of Brazilian culture (Live Brazil Festival and Festival Brazil), taught workshops and performed at numerous cultural events. She also has experience in costume making for the Brazealand Band (as part of Brazealand Project) and teaching Circus Skills.
